Fall at Harper’s Ferry 1

Fall at Harper’s Ferry

It is no secret that I adore Fall.  If you’ve ever met me, we’ve probably had a conversation about my love for everything about Fall… the crisper weather, pumpkin spice and chai lattes, boots and scarves, foliage, and of course, football season!  Now that the weather has lost it’s wicked summer heat, I can finally embrace the season.  In fact, I’m drinking a cup of caramel chai tea as I type this.  To celebrate the arrival of Autumn, here are some of my favorite photos from a trip last Fall up to Harper’s Ferry with my best friend and her precious daughter.

One of the great things about bringing a new camera with you on vacation is getting to practice taking beautiful pictures as you learn all the new functions.  Clearly, I’m partial to sunsets on water… so here are my favorites from Maine.

Maine Lighthouses 2

Maine Lighthouses

One of my favorite parts of the trip to Maine was touring several lighthouses along the coast.  We started with Portland Head at Cape Elizabeth, which was extra special because this is where I was born… in the town, not in the lighthouse itself.

The Burnt Island lighthouse was right across from the house where we stayed.

We also saw Hendricks Head and Cuckholds lighthouses just a few minutes away.

And finally, we drove out to see my favorite at Pemaquid Point.  This one was so picturesque and where the others felt like you were still surrounded by shoreline and other islands, Pemaquid felt like you were standing at the edge with nothing but miles of ocean around.  It was absolutely beautiful, especially with the rocky Maine coast.

This is also where I shot one of my favorite photos from the vacation… Pemaquid lighthouse in the reflection of a pool of seawater on the rocks.  So lovely!

As we were leaving, I was able to capture a few images with the moon in the background.

Another Time 1

Another Time

I recently spent a few days in Maine vacationing at this beautiful home:

It was such a treat to slip away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet up by the water with my Mom.  There happened to be a big Windjammer Festival during our visit and we were able to watch the beautiful ships all gathering in the Harbor for the festivities.  I didn’t even know what a windjammer was and had never seen working ships (ship? boat? schooner?) like these up close, so it was such a treat to be able to sit on the porch and have a fantastic view of them playing on the water.  Watching the old historic windjammers felt like you were slipping back into another time.

When I was a little girl, my favorite book was The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle about a young girl who unintentionally joins the ship’s crew during a coup on a transatlantic voyage.  I loved the story of Charlotte shedding her ladylike confinements and embracing the freedom of life with the crew on the ship.  Charlotte is charged with murder on the ship and the story is filled with adventure and suspense, which I fully embraced as a little girl.  Seeing these beautiful ships come into the harbor brought back memories of this book and the wonderment I felt reading it.
